YouTube video of NJ father who "wired" their autistic son and taped his teachers and associates of the child abuse of his son was very powerful. Simply put, we never know what kind of environment we are sending our children in. We can only hope that they are caring individuals who are there because they love learning and want to help students. Those who teach students with special needs and autistic children should have special training. After hearing the audio of those NJ TAP teachers and disturbing violence that is not verbal autistic child, I assumed that they were not trained at all. Bullying is something that we as a society are willing to talk and less likely to accept as "boys being boys" or part of a childhood ritual that toughens kids. The problem is that parents of children being abused to remain completely in the dark about how things are resolved at the school when the offending behavior is brought to their attention.
For example, when my son was a new student in Atlanta was desperate to make new friends. As a result, school enrollment and children's honed in on him like a pack of wolves feeding on the mangled lamb. Eager to be part of what is explained as "our gang" Shane led the boys into the bathroom and forced to his knees. What happened next has never left my heart, it tears or scars that will remain forever. "Band" in the regular education children were physically forced to lick toilet and urinal as initiation ritual, of course, was nonexistent. I'm sure you can imagine the humiliation Shane felt compelled to do something only to be compounded with laughter echoing in the bathroom as explained in the joy that such a club exists. So, what happened to these children? As parents of the victims, I do not know. Perpetrators of such a humiliating and degrading acts they have more right to privacy, then my son and I had to feel sure it is addressed. So that is the case with the New Jersey father. He has no idea what these university teachers have received a penalty, except that they are actually still teaching somewhere in the district. His situation is particularly distressing obviously for the main fact that these people are there to teach and protect our children, not harm. I can only imagine how this father feels. I think his heart has a tear like mine. Tears that no apology or firing an individual can be cured.
Each parent passes and accepts must let their children grow and essentially let them. It encourages us to be more or less protective and allow them to spread their wings. But what happens when school officials would not protect them while in school? Bullying is not something new. It's just a hot topic in our society today. It may create some positive changes. But there is something fundamentally wrong with our system, if it is deemed a hate crime to commit a violent act against someone because of their religious beliefs or sexual, but they can leave people with disabilities, and often the defense out of the equation.
